The Opening Reception was held at Sydney Observatory at 6pm on the 3rd of July. Our special guest was the Chief Scientist Dr Alan Finkel. The theme for the evening was “Astronomy”. To see photographs from the Welcome Reception, please click here.

Sydney Observatory played an important role in the formation of the Astronomical Society of Australia. Harley Wood who was the director of Sydney Observatory from 1943 to 1974 was also the first President of the ASA. During this time Sydney Observatory completed the large southern zone it was assigned in the Astrographic Catalogue, an international project to photograph and catalogue the whole sky, and began a number of new projects.
